Barbara Klemm’s Artists’ Portraits | posted 13.10.2005

Moments in History

In the portraits of artists as diverse as Andy Warhol, Alfred Hitchcock or Madonna German photographer Barbara Klemm manages to convey an almost private yet deeply respectful glance at the person behind the celebrity. Born in 1939 in Münster, Germany, Barbara Klemm has become best known for her work for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, where she had been working on the editorial staff since 1970, thus strongly influencing the newspaper’s visual appearance. A selection of 70 “Künstlerportraits” (artists’ portraits) can now be seen at the Hamburg Deichtorhallen from September 21st 2005 through January 8th, 2006. Taken between 1968 and 2004 these photographs not only offer a fascinating view of Barbara Klemm’s work but can be also seen as an extraordinary commentary on almost 40 years of cultural history.
